Hello, you have arrived at DIY (do-it-yourself) Organic Gardening and I hope you are as excited about the coming season as I am. I decided to start this website in the planning phase of the gardening season (at least in my part of the world). I’m in the Northeastern part of the United States and it is early January. There’s not much to do with my garden but plan right now and I wanted to start recording everything that I’ve learned to share with all of you. In the coming years, I look forward to your feedback and tips that you may have for your garden! If you are new to gardening, you will learn a lot as you read through this website but you will learn a lot more working in your own garden as the years go on. Gardening is a great activity and the product is something good you sit down at your own table and eat. If you grow your food organically, there is even the added assurance that there are no additives that may not be that good for you. There are so many pleasures to a garden that the good food you get to eat isn’t the only advantage. Once you have gardened for awhile you may become involved with other elements of it such as starting your own seeds. With the passing of the recent holidays I know there are a lot of avid gardeners out there who are waiting patiently for the seed catalogs to come in the mail. You can order specialty seeds if you want to grow something unusual or different and the catalogs really get you in the mood even if you don’t do anymore than look at the pictures. That’s a lot of fun also, especially if you have been in most of the winter. We will look into the different climates and growing seasons across the country along with many aspects of gardening in general. Gardening is a never ending subject with many ways of accomplishing the same thing which is that pretty red tomato you have been watching patiently until it is perfect and harvesting the first ripe one of the year. I know people who compete over who will get the first one! As we are dealing mainly with organic gardening, we will explore things like what does organic really mean? What makes it not organic? What is the best organic material and where do you get it? What is good gardening soil and how to make yours good if it isn’t already as well as the tests you can do to check yours. There is much written material on the subject and references will be listed. Gardening is good for you in several ways. It gets you outside and moving. It saves you money, and you can grow free of chemicals which is healthier. It is a lot of fun. One of my favorite parts is after you have done the planting and then the joy of the seeds popping up and then the first fruits of your labor you see on the plants. Then, when you have a few things coming on and you spend the morning picking your vegetables. As you carry them to the house, they are so bright and pretty. You have several shades of green with the string beans, peppers, cucumbers and some lettuce along with the red tomatoes, radishes or red lettuce in your basket next to the yellow squash. It is just so pretty and you haven’t even cooked it yet! I always grow some flowers so I also have the color of those. I like zinnias, sunflowers and cosmos; and every garden has to have some marigolds. I sincerely hope you enjoy your organic garden as much as I enjoy mine! Welcome to DIY Organic Gardening! |
